Jakmel Expresyon Spring 2011 Fundraising Appeal
As our first project we have to selected to create computer facilites for Jakmel Ekspresyon Art Center (JE), a new vibrant art center in Jakmel Haiti born after the destruction of the January 2010 earthquake when many artists found themselves without homes or places to call artistic workspaces. We are helping JE meet their various short term computing needs from video editing labs for both artists use and instruction to a larger Haitian community eager for digital self expression to a cybercafe for use by members to access email and social networks which are vital pathways to develop shared ideas and to promote work.
Our work with JE is about to reach a significant milestone. The initial components of a multi-media computer lab are in three large wooden crates on a ship in the Miami Harbor today waiting for shipment to Haiti at the end of May 2011. The gear will be met by Sue Frame and Steve Raden who will begin the first phase of multi-media lab installation in Jakmel shortly therafter.
We were excited to receive over $26,000 in in-kind donations of computer, networking and video equipment from our friends and colleagues including a major donation frorm SAIC (School of the Art Institute of Chicago). But we are at a crucial juncture right now. We need to get our crates from Miami to Haiti, through customs and to Jakmel. And while we have much of the hardware we need, the computers won’t be able to be utilized fully without needed software and a proper electrical system that can withstand the daily power outages in Haiti.
We can make this lab happen but not without your help at this time. So we are asking our friends and colleagues and others interested in creating a sustainable arts infrastructure in Haiti to help us. We are hoping to raise $10,000 during May/June 2011 to secure immediate needs of building on-site electrical infrastructure including batteries, power invertors and new wiring, obtaining multimedia software of Final Cut Pro, Pro Tools, CS5 for our 5 multimedia computers, additional A/V playback devices and shipping/customs.
We would be so grateful for any support you could offer us at this point. Whether it be $5 or $500. Whether it be a donation of a copy of CS5 or simply sending this email and links forward to others who might be interested.
